CAROL AILEEN EIDSON ROUGHTON 1944-2023
On October 4, 2023, Carol Aileen Eidson Roughton peacefully passed in her sleep at her Westfield, Stokes County, NC home following a long illness and a period of in-home hospice care. Her loving husband was at her side.
Mrs. Roughton, beloved wife of William (Skip) Roughton, was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1944 in Union County NC to the late Gladys Aileen Newsome Eidson. A 1962 graduate of A. L. Brown High School in Kannapolis NC, Carol went on to earn a B.A. in Sociology and an M.Ed. in Education/Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Carol was a lifelong advocate for empowering persons with disabilities. Her professional career spanned over 35 years in North Carolina and Maryland, retiring after 25 years as a Rehabilitation Supervisor in Harford County for the Maryland State Department of Education.
In 2005, Carol and her husband moved to the close-knit Francisco community in Stokes County, NC to fulfill her dream of riding and caring for her horses on their small farm property.
In addition to her mother Gladys Newsome Eidson and her maternal grandmother Dezzie Godwin Newsome, Carol was preceded in death by siblings Wesley Davis Eidson and Charlotte Eidson Johnson.
At Mrs. Roughton’s request, no formal funeral services have been scheduled. With only close family attending, her wish to join her mother and maternal grandmother in the Jerusalem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Anson County NC will be honored.
